Call for Dorks — People Doing Strange Things with Electricity

July 24th, 2008 by TAW

CALL FOR DORKS
We’re after PEOPLE DOING STRANGE THINGS WITH ELECTRICITY to show us their work at dorkbotlondon.
If you haven’t been along yet, dorkbotlondon is an informal get together where a few people show their projects and ideas to a dorkcrowd of artists who want to be engineers and vice-versa, ranging from 30 to 100 people. We’re a friendly, interested bunch so the less polished and more unusual your presentation the better. It could just be some idea you have, some software bug you’ve exploited or some dorky electronics you’ve repurposed. It just needs to be STRANGE and involve ELECTRICITY in some way. That’s generally means electronics or software is involved, but why not push the boundaries?
How long you present is up to you - from 5 to 10 mins (opendork style) to 20 or 40 minutes (schedule permitting). We can usually fit you in to the next dorkbot, but if not, almost always the one after that.
Maybe you’ve been to dorkbotlondon a few times and have a project you’ve thought about presenting… So do it!
Email your presentation proposal in a single sentence to: mailto:dorkbotlondon@dorkbot.org

July 20th, 2008 by TAW

North Light Gallery, Huddersfield Art Fair HOST:06
The North Light Gallery HOST:06 Art Fair is a new and exciting event organised in tandem with the successful Huddersfield Open Studio Trail (HOST) and the internationally acclaimed Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF).
The prestigious Huddersfield based gallery is proud to be showcasing around 40 of the regions best creative artists and makers from the North of England as part of the Huddersfield Open Studio Trail 2006 - HOST:06. The event launches with the public preview night between 6 and 9pm on Friday November 17 and runs for 9 days from 10am - 6pm until on Saturday November 25th. Admission is free and all are welcome!
The vision for the Art Fair is to promote creative work from talented artists and makers across the region. All the work on show is all available for purchase and will represent a wide range of mediums, from fine art to photography, jewellery to sculpture. The North Light Gallery also has its own art studio and classes and over 50 art students will also be exhibiting their work. The artists and makers will be present during the first three days of the event, allowing visitors the chance to meet the artists and talk to them about their work. There will be the opportunity to buy or commission a unique piece - perfect for Christmas!
The gallery is also running a Children=92s Art Competition during the 9 days of the Art Fair on the theme of the Four Seasons or Self Portrait. A range of fun, supervised, hands-on Creative Workshops will be held at the gallery between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Saturday 18th November (booking advisable, ?2 per child). All the work created during these sessions will be exhibited at the gallery during the Art Fair alongside the visiting artists work. The competition entries will be judged by a selection of the showcasing artists on the last day of the Art Fair and a there are a host of exciting prizes to be won, including vouchers for HotchPotch and a family ticket to Eureka in Halifax for the overall winner.
Artists in Mind:
Arts & mental health charity AIM (Artists in Mind) is to mount a special exhibition at North Light Gallery, Huddersfield, as part of HOST06. The exhibition will feature work by a remarkable group of artists who all use their creativity to benefit their health and wellbeing. Based in studios at Turnbridge Mill and Bates Mill, the 11 artists display an impressive range of styles and techniques, producing work of a very high standard that demonstrates the transformative power of the creative process.
AIM co-ordinator Richard Turner said: “The artists in this exhibition are very special. These artists tell a story of the power of creativity to overcome ill health. They offer the wider community art works that can be beautiful, inspiring, disturbing and humorous, and can challenge all of us to critically examine what it means to suffer mental illness.” The exhibition will also feature a celebration of the work of AIM artist Neil Holdsworth, who is sadly missed since he died in October. Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival:
The North Light Gallery is also a venue for the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF) and is delighted to present The17.
The17 is a choir. Its music has no history, follows no traditions, recognises no contemporaries. The17 has many voices. It uses no libretto, lyrics or words; no time signatures, rhythm or beats; and has no knowledge of melody, counterpoint or harmony. The17 struggles with the dark and responds to the light. http://www.17.org/
The 7 performances by The17 are at the following times: * Sat 18 Nov 3pm * Sun 19 Nov 3pm * Mon 20 Nov 7pm * Wed 22 Nov 7pm * Thu 23 Nov 7pm * Sat 25 Nov 3pm * Sun 26 Nov 3pm Duration: 2hrs
Venue:
The North Light Gallery is based in a refurbished textile mill dating back to 1798, in the heart of Armitage Bridge village. The site is a conservation area, with surrounding woodland and a river making it a very attractive location for visitors. The gallery was founded in 2000 as an independent arts organisation with charitable status by the Trustees of the William Brooke Benevolent Fund. For five years the gallery successfully curated three contemporary art exhibitions per year, hosting artists such as Eric Taylor, Anthony Green RA, Rose Hilton and Trevor Bell and craftspeople from the Northern Potters Association, with free access to visitors. In 2006 the Trustees of the gallery took the difficult decision to cease curating shows due to the financial strain on the charity and focus on hiring the space to artists and the public for events and developing its Art School and arts educational resources. The gallery receives no funding from external sources.
The venue offers free car parking with a capacity for approx 100 cars. During the weekend of 17 =96 19th November there will be free buses taking visitors around all the HOST venues in the area. The rail station of Berry Brow is a 10 minute walk from the gallery, with connections to Sheffield, Leeds and York. There is a frequent bus service which runs along the A616 from Huddersfield to Holmfirth with only a 5 minute walk to the gallery.
The creative cafe ‘Stuffed’ will be open throughout the art fair and offers delicious homemade food, including hot dishes, salads, sandwiches, snacks, cakes and a children’s menu. ‘HotchPotch’, a paint-a-pot shop based in the gallery, will also be open throughout the art fair and for visitors who would like to do some hands-on creativity during their visit. Both Hotchpotch and Stuffed have also generously donated vouchers to CIDA to be awarded to visitors who attend each venue.
The gallery opening hours during the HOST:06 Art Fair are as follows:
* Fri 17 Nov 6-9pm * Sat 18 Nov 10am-6pm * Sun 19 Nov 10am-6pm * Mon 20 Nov 10am-6pm * Tue 21 Nov 10am-6pm * Wed 22 Nov 10am-6pm * Thu 23 Nov 10am-6pm * Fri 24 Nov 10am-6pm * Sat 25 Nov 10am-4pm
The Huddersfield Open Studio Trail is now in its third year and has a growing reputation amongst the public and arts professionals as a very high quality, unique and enjoyable event. The North Light Gallery hopes that by participating in both HOST:06 and the HCMF we will draw on a diverse audience base and attract contemporary art and craft buyers from across the North to this exciting venue. * Ray’s Jazz started its life in the 1950s as Collet’s jazz and folk record shop in New Oxford Street. Drummer, jazz and cricket enthusiast, Ray Smith, joined the shop in 1956; the shop’s reputation amongst the jazz community as a place for fans and musicians to hear some great music and swap stories grew steadily. After a move to Shaftesbury Avenue in 1976, Collet’s eventually decided to sell up in 1983. Ray Smith and his wife, Wendy, pooled their savings and Ray’s Jazz Shop was born. Ray’s Jazz re-located to Foyles in June 2002, and has 1400 sq ft of floor space.
