MiE: avant-garde music theatre spectacle at the Space/ 16th-19th November
MiE 16th-19th November 2006
at The Space, Docklands, London (16th/17th @ 20.00 and 18th/19th @ 16.00 and 20.00)
MiE is a new ninety-minute contemporary music theatre creation by Catherine Kontz. Like an opera without voices, this orchestral theatre work enhances the musical text by integrating visual devices in order to narrate a story. Featuring thirty-nine musicians, six mimes, an acrobat and a wizard, the combination of music and visuals opens contemporary music to new audiences making it more accessible to the general public.
Drawing on inspirations ranging from Japanese Kabuki to Lynchean cinema, the production of MiE can be compared to the theatre of Robert Wilson (The Black Rider, Einstein on the Beach), Steve Reich (The Cave) and Laurie Anderson (O Superman). The November performances will feature special guest artist Alasdair Malloy, a world-renowned glass harmonica specialist who has recorded with the Icelandic artist Björk and featured on the popular Harry Potter soundtracks.
Ellan Parry, winner of the 2005 Jocelyn Herbert Award for stage design, will take care of the wonderful scenography and costume design, while Kristina Hjelm will play with the magic of lighting. Emily Wilkins conducts the musicians and mimes through the lands of glass and water.
The audience of MiE will enjoy an extraordinary theatre experience. The show works on several levels and it is possible for children and adults alike to enjoy it. Its multi-facetted features bring contemporary music and orchestral sounds to children in a new and exciting way and provide an alternative to opera, musicals and contemporary classical concerts by treating contemporary music material in an original, modern and more inviting way.
