An experiment with tradition Upasana - (Winners of the Greater Manchester Dance Competition 2006) presents Utsav 2006
Upasana is a celebration of South Asian art and culture in Manchester, and bring the very best to the British audience to emphasize that tradition is not passé.
Utsav 2006 is a celebration of our local community’s effort to explore themselves and an intriguing culture. Celebrating Upasana’s second birthday, with 30 students from our classes at Manchester High School for Girls, Didsbury and Oldham, Upasana welcomes you to share our experience, joy and achievement.
Artistic Director , Deepa Ganesh; Utsav 2006 is ‘Celebrating community participation. Exploring the artiste in one and all. Experiencing mystic India. Sharing an evening of beauty, joy and achievement.’

Upasana’s story so far…. In just six months, Upasana has performed 4 times and conducted more than 20 workshops at The Lowry. In a year’s time, through more than 50 performances and workshops, Upasana has addressed an audience of more than 3000 people.
2005 ‘What is Bharatanatyam?’, a 6 month demystifying project at The Lowry. ‘Shakti’, a 150 minute solo dance presentation at the The Lowry ‘Utsav 2005’, an explosion of young talent and joy. 2006 ‘Aarambh’, the first original Bharatanatyam choreography from the Northwest in an accessible yet traditional style .
• “In one month, Upasana has done workshops in 15 schools and community groups in Wigan, Rochdale, Salford, Manchester,Oldham and Trafford covering more than 600 particpants. • Over three months, their performances have addressed atleast 600 audience. • Aarambh’s premier at The Lowry and Waterside Arts Center reached more than 300 people. • 1500 people in 100 days!!”
